Artist Spotlight: JPø
“My name is JPø (or just JP), and I’m a 23 year old singer, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist that lives in the space between Pop, R&B, Indie, and more. I live in Connecticut, where I spend time outside of my full-time job honing my craft to create the best music I can.
Though my comfort zone is in creating catchy and sonically complex music, I consistently challenge myself to be more personal and honest in my writing. This current period of my artistry is defined by my attempt to find my identity as an artist, both sonically and aesthetically. I’ve yet to find a niche for myself which can be overwhelming, but simultaneously very exciting as I see where I can take my work.
In the vein of more honest writing, my most recent song, “hands”, is written from the perspective of a me from several years ago, where I had just gotten out of my first real long-term relationship. The push and pull of feeling like I was ready to jump into something new while also not taking the time to heal led to a lack of direction and discipline. I fled into the arms of others trying to fill a void that I had to close on my own. But I just couldn’t bring myself to stop trying to find love. I was falling apart at the seams, and I was convinced only the hands of others could keep me together. I wanted this song to feel like fake confidence. I wanted the listener to feel my arrogance and also the bite of my existential dread. In sum, I think I accomplished that balance.
