On The Rise: Ryan Curran
Born in a small town in Massachusetts, Ryan Curran found his passion for songwriting by picking up an old Ovation acoustic guitar his dad had sitting at the base of the stairs in their living room. After being gifted a complete songs collection of The Beatles, Ryan taught himself how to play guitar by reading chord charts of some of his favorite songs including Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds and Rocky Raccoon. Eventually learning how to play Beatles songs turned into a song writing passion.
Ryan and his family made a cross-country train ride from Boston to California and ended up making the permanent move to Los Angeles in 2001. As time went on, he began to write more, and eventually started to the explore the world of recording and music production. The combination of songwriting and recording eventually led to the creation of Ryan’s first full Length album: Beacon Hill.
Beacon Hill is a musical representation of a 10-year period of Ryan’s life including: cross country road trips, transitioning into adulthood, struggling with the ups and downs of creating music, relationships, and train rides through the desert. The Folk Rock sounds of Beacon Hill are inspired by the music of Neil Young, The Lumineers, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles. The album was created as an introduction into Ryan’s musical creativity, and the first steppingstone towards Ryan finding his true sound as a musician.
The recording of Beacon Hill lasted five years and included collaborations with several amazing artists. During the recording of Beacon Hill, a full circle moment arrived when Ryan had the opportunity to work with recording engineer Shelly Yakus. Yakus engineered many artists including, Tom Petty, U2 and John Lennon. Beacon Hill was recorded at Leprechaun Crossing Studios, Studio City Sound, and Aftermaster Studios in Los Angeles.
Feel free to listen to a bit of Beacon Hill and get lost in the sounds of a rustic and inspirational folk album.
